OLD SPITALFIELDS MARKET IN LONDON
As lovers of good food, we often visit food markets. It's always a great place to come across new brands and products, with plenty of opportunities to taste something new.
At this time of the year, markets get busier and we thought sharing some of our favourites could help you decide where to explore next!
Today we have chosen the Old Spitalfields Market.
HISTORY OF THE OLD SPITALFIELDS MARKET
Located in the heart of East London, this is the original East London market place that has been on-site for over 350 years. It all started back in 1638 when King Charles I gave a licence for flesh, fowl and roots to be sold on Spittle Fields, which used to be a rural area on the eastern outskirts of London.
These days, it is one of the most popular and coolest markets in London! It is the number 1 destination for food, art, music, fashion, events and much more in East London. The many award-winning restaurants and cafes in Old Spitalfields Market are quickly becoming East London’s top spot for eating out and attract weekly thousands of foodies from around the globe.
HOW TO GET THERE?
It is easy to get to, about a 5-minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. As it was raining when we visited, we really appreciated this market is covered all-year-round and admired the original Victorian buildings designed by George Sherrin. At this time of the year, we suggest wrapping up warm as the sides are open and you can get cold.
If you visit in warmer months, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy your street food on the outer bit of the market building. You can also spot some pretty cool artwork and definitely make sure you explore the nearby little shops, restaurants and boutiques.
WHEN TO VISIT?
The market is open every day and can have anywhere up to 110 stalls on its busiest days. Weekends are usually the busiest, but there is something different happening on most days.
- Wednesday - The Silk Series (fashion and art)
- Thursday - An antique market
- Friday - A vinyl records fair ( on 1st & 3rd Fridays each month)
Address: Old Spitalfields Market | London E1 6AA | Opening Times

From London’s most famous fish and chips shop to modern French cuisine and Asian Fusion, this is a place for everyone to unleash their inner gourmet. This market is family-friendly and can be easily turned into a whole family day out with loads of great food and interesting things to see.
